Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Pam Koon, Dexter School, who was selected as the 2009-2010 GA/AL Teacher of the Year. Pam has taught PE at Dexter for the past 28 years.Pam is the consummate team player and enthusiastically embraces change that leads to increased student learning. Pam uses her students’ time in PE to support the instruction going on in the regular classrooms. She regularly asks teachers what they are teaching and integrates those skills into her lessons. Dr. Mallory, former Dexter principal, states “I have often observed Pam’s classes running relays that involve solving math problems and playing games which utilize vocabulary and other academic skills as part of the learning. She has also embraced technology as a tool for quality teaching and learning in her class. Any time there is an opportunity to learn a new teaching skill, Pam is there for the training, often on her own time.”Pam is truly a teacher leader who has brought a variety of curricular and extracurricular activities to the students and families at Dexter. Some of these include sign language classes, serving as a mentor teacher for student interns, World Sport Stacking Teams, Sign Language Choir, Deaf Awareness Field Day, and PE Internet Challenges. Most recently, Pam involved students and teachers at Dexter in P.A.C.E. Trek (Promoting Active Children Everywhere), an activity which involves students, via the Internet, in one man’s 500 mile jog through Alaska to promote youth health and fitness.Pam is very involved in the community through a variety of voluntary and civic activities. Some examples of this involvement include teaching Vacation Bible School, helping to build a school in Mexico for deaf children, and providing in-service programs to schools in the tri-city area. Pam also knits hats and donates them to the Dulaan Project which collects hats for the homeless people in Mongolia. In addition to making hats, she spent weeks crocheting and knitting scarves for participants in the National Special Olympics. She consistently looks for ways to support the community both locally and globally.
