What is AVID?

AVID is a program which can include grades 4 through 12.  It prepares students for entry to a four-year university and is aimed towards students  who have a desire to exceed and attend a four year university.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  This means that students must have the determination to help advance himself/herself through hard work and preparation.
AVID is NOT a program for unmotivated struggling students or a program to “save” uncooperative students. In order for a student to succeed, he/she must be motivated on their own and just need the skills to do so.  In AVID class, this is what we work on… the skills.
In AVID each person has a role… the Teacher, Coordinator, Site Team, Student, and Parent.  The cooperation and determination between all of these people in their roles, helps the program to be successful.
In addition, “AVID students  are more likely to take AP classes, complete their college eligibility requirements, and get into four-year colleges than students who don’t take AVID”
“AVID is at work in over 4,000 schools in 45 states and 15 countries” according to the data from last year. (www.avidonline.org).  This year even more schools have started an AVID program including Beaufort County Schools.  Battery Creek HS, Beaufort High, and Whale Branch Early College HS all will have AVID ready for your 8th grade student next year as they enter their freshman year of high school.
Thank you for being a part of our AVID program and we look forward to a great AVID school year with your support!
