Gifted EducationPhilosophy and Guiding Principles Giftedness appears in many different forms in every cultural group at every level of society. Schools must provide varied and challenging learning opportunities matched to the needs and talents of students with high potential. No single instrument or score should be used to determine eligibility. Assessment of students should continue over time. Gifted students require differentiated learning experiences, K-12 Differentiated learning experiences for gifted students are designed to supplement and build upon the DoDEA Curriculum standards Gifted students have unique patterns of social and emotional development.
Steps to Identification The purpose of identification for gifted services is to find students whose potential and/or performance is so extraordinary that they require differentiation in their instructional program. Steps in identification process: Referral—screening, nomination by educators, parents/guardians, or students themselves, or transfer records Parent permission and rating scale Assessment by teacher Data gathering Eligibility decision by Gifted Review Committee Determination of gifted program services.
Gifted Education Service Options Schools select program services for identified students from the following: Regular classroom with additional challenges and supplemental experiences Regular classroom with additional challenges along with other identified students Regular classroom with advanced instruction in a specified area/s at another grade level Resource sessions in the gifted resource room, targeted to a specific academic area and aligned with DoDEA content standards Other services determined by the Gifted Resource Committee
