Our mission is to provide our patrons with an environment where they can develop a love and appreciation of books and reading; the skills and quality resources necessary to effectively utilize information and the desire to become lifelong readers and learners.
Where: Elliott Elementary Library Media Center Who: All classes participate in Library Media classes. When: The number of times the classes attend varies. We are on an A B C D E F day schedule and Week 1 and Week 2. We also have optional opportunities for whole class instruction and Open Access throughout the day for individual students.
What: Our collection contains Picture, Nonfiction, Fiction and Biography books; periodicals; and storybook cassette sets which our students may borrow. Books from the Reference section and online resources are used for research. We also have a Professional library of print and nonprint materials for the faculty.
How: Students are introduced to/participate in:
Why: We want our students to utilizing our library media center and cultivate a love of reading.
Loan Policy: First and second grade students may borrow two books. Kindergarten students will begin choosing one book for home in late November. Pre-K students will soon choose one book from a pre-selected group of books appropriate for their age.
Selecting Books: We encourage our first and second grade students to choose at least one book they can read independently. However, we also encourage them to select books they are interested in. With your assistance these books will not only expand their base of knowledge but challenge them and help increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
Media Parents : All parents are encouraged to borrow books from our collection for home reading. Five books may be selected each visit and may be kept for two weeks. Your children may return the books to the Library Media Center for you.
Overdue Policy: There are no fines for overdue books. However, if a child has an overdue book, he will not be able to borrow any other books until all overdue books are returned. Reminders are sent home when a book is overdue a second class period. “Lost book” letters are mailed home if a book is not returned after a month.
Lost or damaged books and materials: If a child or parent loses or damages an item borrowed from our Library Media Center, he is responsible for replacing it. We are not allowed to accept money but request you contact a local bookstore or online source to purchase the replacement. Information necessary for replacement will be included in the letter sent home.
Reading Counts: The software program that manages and motivates independent reading.
Read Across America: A school wide reading incentive program which encourages students to read daily with their parents.
Visitation: We are happy to have parents accompany their child to a scheduled library media class.
Volunteer Opportunities: Flyers or letters are often sent home requesting volunteers for special events. Parents and those from the community are always welcome to help us with routine maintenance.
“Through the use of books I had the whole world at my feet: could travel anywhere, meet anyone, and do anything." - Benjamin Carson
