Quote of the Month “A monolingual child is an underprivileged child”. FLESSee Kindergarten and First Grade News
Spanish LiteracyOne of the goals of the FLES program is for students to achieve proficiency in reading, writing, listening and comprehension in a second language. Students have been involved in a lot of literacy-based activities. First graders have been using their background knowledge of English to decipher Spanish words (this would not work in a language like Russian though). ¡Viva el español! They have moved on from simply reciting the ABC song to reading two syllable words such as ca-sa, ma-no, papa, and bo ca. As you may already know, they have read their first book in Spanish, Mi Comida. The book, Dinosaurios will follow. I am extremely proud of their progress. Ask your first grader to spell his/her name in Spanish and your kindergartener to sing the Spanish ABC song. Students have been given a good foundation to be successful in the next Spanish level. Cinco de Mayo CelebrationCinco de Mayo CelebrationIn recognition of the Cinco de Mayo (May 5), Spanish students will explore some of the foods Mexico has contributed to the America and most importantly, the importance of corn in the American diet. These lessons are an extension of our unit on foods. This celebration is made possible thanks to funds by the PTO. Some of the activities include:
Students with allergies to any of the foods mentioned above will be given an alternative snack and or activity. What is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates Mexico’s successful defeat of Napoleon and the French army on May 5, 1862. We recognize this holiday in the US to honor México, our neighbor to the south, its people, foods and music. To learn more about this holiday go to www.moonchildren.com/cincodemayo/index.htm Post AssessmentIn early May, all Spanish students will be given a post assessment in the areas of listening and reading. I am confident that students will do as well on this final assessment as they did on the previous one. Websites Spanish Vocabulary www.spanishspanish.com
