About Our School
Maxwell Air Force Base Elementary School was established in 1963 in Montgomery, Alabama. It is operated and funded under the direction of the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DoD DDESS). Since its inception, the elementary school has provided educational services for military dependents living in permanent housing on Maxwell Air Force Base. Students who reside at Gunter Annex were declared eligible to attend in 2002. Maxwell AFB Elementary School has been a part of several DDESS consolidations since 1996. Currently, the school is a part of the Georgia/Alabama District that combines the schools at Fort Rucker, Fort Benning, and Maxwell Air Force Base under the direction of one superintendent. Programs of study are provided for students in preschool through sixth grade and special education for eligible three-year-olds through sixth grade. Maxwell AFB Elementary School is accredited through the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI). Beginning with the 2007-2008 school term, Maxwell began a new process of accreditation under AdvancED. The accreditation process relies on ongoing self-assessment of schools using quality standards, on-site evaluation, and continuous improvement. For more information concerning AdvancED, click on the following link: http://www.advanc-ed.org The elementary school is housed in a traditional building with 44 classrooms (26 with restrooms), a media center, cafeteria, gymnasium, two science labs, three technology labs, art and music rooms, and a health office. Additional facilities include three teacher preparation areas, multi-purpose/training facility, auditorium with stage, school administrative office, covered walkways and loading areas, maintenance shop and supply/storage areas. Handicapped accessible playgrounds are available for both primary and intermediate use. Maxwell Elementary School offers a comprehensive course of study based on the DoDEA Content Standards. In addition to the academic subjects, there are also content standards for the disciplines of art, music, and physical education. Students who exhibit DoDEA established criteria for Gifted Education are provided differentiated instruction as well as social and emotional support. All students in kindergarten through sixth grade participate in physical education and third through sixth grade students participate in the FitnessGram test in physical education class. Parent participation is a strength at Maxwell Elementary School with volunteers working in the school. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) has sponsored a wide variety of activities that include school-community fundraisers, book fair, school store, holiday market for students, reading nights, and specialty meals for the family. The primary focus for Maxwell AFB Elementary School is to provide an exemplary educational program to prepare students for success in the global environment.
