Pupil Services
Gifted Education
Gifted services are available to eligible students in grades K-8. These services differentiate the content, process, and products of the regular classroom experience. Service options include resource room classes., differentiation in the classroom, grade acceleration, interdisciplinary opportunities, and individualized services. Teaching models used to differentiate include the Paul Reasoning Model, concept development, problem-based learning, Socratic Seminar, and a research model.
Students who have received gifted services at another DoDEA school will automatically receive gifted services at Dahlgren School; all other students must be referred to Dahlgren School's Gifted Identification Committee to be considered for gifted services using DodEA's gifted identification procedures. Transfer students who have received gifted services at their previous (non-DoDEA) school will be automatically referred for assessment.
Special Education
Students enrolled in our special education program receive a variety of services. We serve those students whose IEP's include academic, emotional, social and/or behavioral goals. Our students receive services in the general education classroom (co-teach) and in the resource room (pull-out). The special education programs at Dahlgren School serve students in preschool through eighth grade. Our staff of professionals includes our special education teacher, speech language pathologist, school psychologist, occupational/physical therapist and educational aide.
In order for a student in our system to qualify for special education services, he/she must have gone through the following process:
- Pre-referral
- Intervention
- Referral
- Evaluation
- Eligibility
- Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Placement
- Annual Review
If you suspect that your child has a disability, please contact our school.
If your child is currently enrolled in our special education program, and you have any questions about the program, please contact his/her case manager.
Speech Language Pathology
The speech-language pathologist at Dahlgren School works as part of a team, which may include teachers, physicians, audiologists, psychologists, social workers, parents and others, to help students improve their communication skills. Support is offered in a wide variety of areas including articulation, vocabulary, grammar, and language expression.
Guidance
Guidance Services at Dahlgren School include individual and small group counseling for school related issues such as behavior management, study skills, making and keeping friends and organizing work. Also covered are themes such as study skills, conflict resolution, self-awareness and careers.
Standardized group testing is facilitated through the Guidance Office. Students are tested in the Spring with the CTBS TerraNova Tests of Achievement which measures what they have learned.
Resources for parents include a library of magazines, books and tapes which are kept in the guidance room. Educational sessions for parents are provided on a regular basis to supplement classroom instruction.
English As A Second Language (ESL)
All incoming students who speak a language at home other than English are evaluated by our ESL specialist. Students are provided services as needed.
