Focus on Fifth

Students in class

Fifth grade follows the Department of Defense curriculum standards in all areas.  Field trips and special events occur throughout the year as an integrated part of the curriculum.  Students learn the D.A.R.E. program in fifth grade.

Parents and community volunteers serve a vital role in support of our instructional programs.

Volunteers serve in many ways:

  • room parents
  • helpers with assignments/projects at home
  • chaperones on field trips
  • contributors to class parties or projects
  • mentors/tutors on special projects
  • speakers on special interests or vocations
  • support of school-wide program

Parents and students should become familiar with the Student Handbook.

Grading

The grading scale for fifth grade is as follows:

  • A: 90-100%
    B: 80-90%
    C: 70-80%
    D: 60-70%
    F: Below 60%
  • We encourage sponsors in grades 4 and above to sign up for a Gradespeed account so you may better monitor your student's progress.

Homework

Please check student agendas nightly for specific details in each subject area.

A general guideline: One hour each night is usually the maximum time required to complete work. Often the work is practice on something started in class.

Students should read at least 30 minutes nightly. This may be a book assigned by teacher or one chosen by student appropriate for the age and ability of student.

Every two weeks graded papers will be sent home with a note from the teacher. Please sign and return.
