2007-08:
We are very proud of our fifth graders who have had their work published
in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper. To be included, students
must submit a response to a question posed by the paper. Responses are
then chosen from among the schools throughout the Fredericksburg area:
S.C. - Freedom of Speech. "Freedom
of speech is very important to me. Freedom of speech is very important
to me because with freedom of speech I can talk about our government
and how I disagree and not go to jail. It is also important to me
because in different countries you can get arrested for saying you
are against like saying you hate what the president is doing. That
is why freedom of speech is important to me."
S.C. - Holiday Memory News Flash. "Last New Year's Eve, I had
the best time. Our friends from Tennessee came to visit and we went
to Cheeseburger in Paradise for dinner. When we were done eating,
we got party hats for the boys and tiaras for the girls that all said
"Happy New Year." When we got home, we played games and
watched a football game. We didn't get to stay up until midnight,
but we did get to stay up late. That is my favorite holiday memory."
S.C. - Tongue Twister. "Busy Bees Buzz by Mr. Bucks Barber shop
after blowing bubbles on Blue Boulevard."
S.C. - February 29th Birthday. " In my opinion I would like
my birthday on February 29th. I would like my birthday to be on February
29th so that if it wasn’t a leap year I would have two days
to choose from. Also I could have a party with my family on the 28th
and a party with my friends on the 1st of March. Those are some reasons
that I would like my birthday on February 29th."
S.C. Why I Read the Newspaper. "I don’t read the newspaper
that much but when I do I read the kids section. I like to read the
kids section because like to read what people have written and sent
in. I also like to see what the theme and puzzles are for the week.
I also like to see if people I know have been published or if I have
been published. That is what I read in the newspaper."
S.C. My Junkyard Sport. "Here is a sport you can play with recycled
stuff. You need some recycled tubes or pipes that you can link together
so that there are twists and turns. Then at the end you need to build
a circle out of sticks. When you’re done you can build another
one so that you can play this game with someone else. The last thing
you need is marbles. You can let them roll down the tubes and then
the person who knocks the most of the other person’s marbles
out of the circle wins. That is my junkyard sport."
S.C. You're the Teacher. "Katie makes 30 cookies for a bake
sale. Mary buys half of the cookies. Mary’s brother eats a third
of her cookies. How many did her brother eat? Answer: 5 "

M.H. - Money Word Problem. "Saige as
$394.00 in birthday money. She wants to buy a radio that cost $ 40.00
and a CD that cost $9.00. How much money will she have if is gets
the radio and the CD?"
M.H. - Holiday Memory News Flash. "It was Christmas and I was
about 6 years old. I wanted a Disney Princess stroller for two years.
My brother woke me up. We were at our house that year; we usually
went to my grandma and grandpa's house. The stroller was pink with
all the Disney Princesses on it. Santa gave it to me and it also came
with a baby doll. That was the best gift I got that year."

K.S. - Healthy Lunch. "My healthy lunch
would be a sandwich, carrots, and some strawberries. The sandwich
would be made from wheat bread, some turkey, cheese, and maybe some
mayo. The carrots would be washed and would also have some ranch with
them. The strawberries would be washed and delicious. I would also
have a dark chocolate. I would have dark chocolate because it is good
for your heart. My drink would probably be some milk. That would be
my healthy lunch."
K.S. - February 29th Birthday. " In my opinion I would not want
to have my birthday on the 29th of February. I wouldn’t want
to have my birthday on the 29th because I would feel like my birthday
was in 4 more years instead of every year. That is why I wouldn’t
want to have my birthday on the 29th of February."
