The Three Little Pigs Team from QMHS has been selected as a contest Winner:

One of our QMHS PlantingScience.Org (PS)  Teams ,THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, has been selected as a contest winner for their research project conducted recently in class.  Our students have been working with scientists online (as mentors) to carry out an investigation on Nasturtium, a small flowering plant.  These three students worked very well as a team and carried out the Experimental Design procedures necessary to come to a reliable conclusion. Their work is featured in the STAR PROJECT Winners section of the  http://plantingscience.org/index.php  website.

This year the Quantico Middle/High School Environmental Science classes will be participating in a national program aptly named, Trout in the Classroom (TIC).

This program is sponsored by Trout Unlimited and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  The Eastern Brook Trout is native to the Commonwealth of Virginia, residing  in the most pristine of waters the Commonwealth's  Ridge and Valley Province.  QMHS students were given 120 trout embryos and will rear them in a  temperature controlled tank donated to the classroom five years ago.  Students will monitor water quality throughout the school year using chemical test kits and probeware.  In the spring of 2015 QMHS students will release the fingerlings to the Rose River, a cold, clear stream located in Madison County, Virginia.
At first glance it may seem that the TIC program focuses on the "stocking" aspect of trout to keep the species numbers at a sustainable level.  However, the program's true goal is to demonstrate the incredibly delicate nature of these cold water ecosystems.  The brook trout survives only when the water in which they live matches their very narrow range of tolerances.  Because QMHS students  will be responsible for the trout habitat in the classroom, they will glean some valuable insight regarding these types of ecosystems and will be better informed  when they are making decisions as voters, home owners and leaders in their communities.
