Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States. It is the smallest of the Greater Antilles islands, known as the Island of Enchantment, and is approximately 100 miles long and 35 miles wide. It is a land of glistening, palm fringed beaches and vivid green mountains; of sun, ancient fortresses and churches contrasting with modern factories and resort hotels. Island of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is of volcanic origin and is home to El Yunque, the only Rain Forest, governed directly by the U.S.

The island’s tropical climate supports abundant vegetation with palm trees everywhere.

The southern portion of the island is more desert-like and cactus is common.

Military Installations on the Island of Puerto Rico

U.S. Army, Fort Buchanan  

Fort Buchanan is situated on 746 acres on the outskirts of San Juan in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. It is a U.S. Army Reserve Post and home to the 65 th Regional Readiness Command, providing support to 15,000 reserve and active duty soldiers from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Fort Buchanan is our nation’s only fully bilingual and bicultural force. Today, Fort Buchanan is the only active Army Post in the Caribbean region.

U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen  

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen is situated close to Ramey Unit School, named for the Ramey Air Force Base that closed in 1970. The Coast Guard operates HH-65A helicopters from its Air Station and focuses primarily on search and rescue operations. The Air Station is part of Sector San Juan.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan, located in Old San Juan, is responsible for all Coast Guard operations in the Eastern Caribbean region. Its primary missions are:

  • the enforcement of laws and regulations of the United States relative to national defense
  • smuggling/counter narcotics operations
  • fisheries management
  • marine transportation and safety
  • maritime security
  • protection of natural resources
  • waterways management
  • to carry out general Coast Guard duties in military readiness by the organization, indoctrination, training and discipline of all members assigned.
