The four DDESS Schools in Puerto Rico provide educational services to students across the island of Puerto Rico. Three schools are located at Fort Buchanan and a Pre-K-12 unit school is located on the island's western side, some 75 miles from Fort Buchanan, near Aguadilla. Our student population is currently:
49% Department of Defense dependents
10% U.S. Coast Guard dependents
41% dependents from other federal government agencies.
Local public and private schools
The San Juan area has 13 School Districts with about 250 schools. The primary language of the Public School System is Spanish, although bilingual education is offered at many schools within the system. In addition there are many private schools in the area.
Superintendent's Office
Mr. Gould's home base is in Quantico, Virginia and in addition
to Puerto Rico, he supervises the DDESS schools in West Poinr and
New York, too.
In addition to the personnel who work at each of our school sites, the Puerto Rico Schools employ a small support staff in the district office to provide specialized services in such areas as curriculum, special education, English as a Second Language (ESL), transportation, finance, logistics, safety and security, human resources, student eligibility and enrollment, facilities maintenance, child nutrition services, and technology. Additional support is provided by our DDESS Area Service Center which is located in Peachtree City, Georgia, and under the direction of Dr. Elaine Beraza.
