School Policies and Procedures - Dress Code

The student dress code is in effect from the time students arrive on school grounds in the morning until the 2:15 PM dismissal bell.

The students uniform is:

  • Official AHS shirt
  • Khaki pants/slacks
  • Appropriate closed shoes.

Students who come to school out of uniform will be placed in In-School-Suspension (ISS) while the sponsor is called to bring the official uniform.  In the event the sponsor cannot be reached or is unable to come to the school, the student will not be allowed to attend classes and will remain in ISS for the remainder of the day. Repeat offenders will receive progressively serious consequences for added violations.

Note:  Parents cannot excuse students from wearing the specified uniform and should not send excuses for students to wear other than the specified uniform.  (Laundry problems, staying somewhere else, etc. will not be accepted as excuses.)

Shirts

  • Official, unaltered, collared, short-sleeved black polo shirts with AHS Logo only.
  • The senior class has the option of choosing a Senior Polo.”
  • If a shirt is worn under the uniform shirt, it must be tucked inside uniform pants/slacks. Students who violate this rule will be asked to remove the under shirt and it will be confiscated.
  • Club or class T-shirts may only be worn on Friday or special activity days. Use of extracurricular shirts (clubs, sports teams) must have prior approval from the administration.

Pants

  • Must be worn at the waistline (at or above the hips) and secured with a belt.
  • Only tailored* khaki** colored slacks or pants are permitted.
  • Jeans are not permitted except on special occasions for fund-raising.
  • Underclothing or skin must not be showing between the waistline and the school shirt.
  • "Short" pants must be long enough to cover the knee.
  • The bottom of the pant leg must not touch the ground or be slit.
*Tailored
Not excessively baggy, oversized, or skin tight.
**Khaki
Brown tone and NOT white or green tones.

Sweaters and Jackets

  • Plain black or plain white only, with no logo or advertisement of any kind.
  • An official school jacket may be bought from the AHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)
  • School Clubs, Classes and Sports Teams may have their own official jacket or sweatshirt, but it’s use must be approved in advance by the administration.

Shoes

Closed shoes or sneakers are the only acceptable footwear. Crocs, sandals, and any shoe with an open heel or toe are prohibited.

Head Gear

  • Any type of garment or accessory covering the head will not be permitted on school grounds at any time.
  • This includes bandanas, scarves, caps or hats.
  • Once inside the building, dark, non-prescription sunglasses are prohibited.
  • Unauthorized head covers will be confiscated.

Dress Code non-compliance will result in:

  1. A parent phone call to bring the student the proper uniform item.
  2. An attempt to borrow uniform items from a friend in order to comply.
  3. Placement in the office/ISS for the remainder of the day if parent or sponsor cannot be contacted.
  4. Repeat offenders may receive detention or suspension.
  5. Non-approved accessories will be confiscated and only returned to the sponsor. The school is NOT responsible for lost items while in possession of the school.
