Fifth Graders Meet Mrs. Jimmy Carter

Field Trip

Fifth graders from E. A. White, Ft. Benning, GA, received a special surprise on a recent field trip to the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, GA.  Students toured the boyhood home and farm of President Jimmy Carter and then went to a special play “A Patch of Blue” about the life of Anne Frank at the Jimmy Carter museum.  After the performance the students were treated to a very special surprise…Mrs. Jimmy Carter talked to the students in the “school room” at the museum.  She told many interesting stories about her life in Plains, how she met President Carter, and explained to the students about the mission of the Carter Center in Atlanta.  Students asked questions and were delighted to meet the “First Lady.”  It was a field trip that the students will always remember!

The Ft. Benning E.A. White Elementary School Roaring Lions Robotics team participated in the local and regional Science and Technology First Lego League Robotics competitions with great success. The local Columbus, GA tournament took place on December 3rd at Columbus State University. Out of 19 teams from Columbus and nearby towns, The Roaring Lions placed second in the Robotics competition, in which the students had to program their robot to accomplish as many missions as possible in an allotted amount of time. In addition to that award, the team placed second in the overall competition which allowed them to advance to the Super Regional Competition in Warner Robins GA on January 7th.

The First Lego League competition incorporates four judging components each taking equal value. The components are not only the Robotics missions’ runs and the robot technical design component but also core values and project components. The core values component includes the students being judged on inspiration, teamwork and gracious professionalism. The project component judges the students on research, innovative solution, and presentation. The E.A. White students scored high in all areas. Most importantly is the learning that has taken place through this entire process.

At the Super Regional Competition in Warner Robins, the Roaring Lions was among 40 teams competing. Amazingly, the team placed second in the overall competition. In the technical category where the students share the robot mechanical design, demonstrate robot programming, and discuss their innovation and strategy for the robotics category the students placed first. This contributed greatly to their second place overall rating.

The accomplishment of second place in the regional competition allowed the Roaring Lions to compete on Saturday January 28th in the state competition at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The team performed well in all areas and placed 3rd out of 48 teams in grades 4th through 8th  in the Robotics segment of the competition. That was an amazing accomplishment for this young team.
