Dr. Julio Gonzalez is the Principal of Faith Middle School, Fort Benning, Georgia. He has held varied administrative positions in the DoDEA/DDESS system, first as Assistant Principal of Scott Middle School, next as Acting Principal of Macdonald Intermediate School, also serving as Principal of Scott's Middle School and now Principal of Faith Middle School. Born in Puerto Rico, “Dr. G” is truly a world traveler, thanks to the Department of Defense Education Activity. He has worked for DoDEA for almost 30 years. He began his teaching career as US / Virginia History and Government at Fairfax County, Virginia. After completing his Master of Arts in Teaching in the Washington, DC area, he was hired by the DoDDS in the summer of 1982. He began his DoDEA teaching career at George Dewy High School, Subic Bay, Philippines, where he taught Social Studies and ESL from 1982-1987. He was transferred to Okinawa, Japan, where he taught Spanish and ESL at Kadena High School from 1987-1990. He spent the next two years teaching Social Studies, ESL and Spanish at Zaragoza Unit School before the school closed in 1992. He was transferred to Lajes Jr. /Sr. High School at the Azores, Portugal, where he taught Spanish and Social Studies for the next three years (1992-1995). Based on a three year assignment clause, he was transferred to Balboa High School, Panama, where he taught AP Spanish and Social Studies (1995-1999). Four years later, he helped with the closure of the school before becoming a school administrator at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 1999. “Dr. G’s” professional training includes degrees from University of Puerto Rico (BA); Trinity College, Washington DC (MAT); University of Santo Tomas, Manila (Ph.D.), and Western Kentucky University (Instructional Leadership). He is married to Daisy Mariela (from Colombia) and has two daughters: (Jessica Mariela, married with two children and stationed at Lajes Air Base, Azores, Portugal and Julie Tatiana, just graduated from Columbus Stare University this year. He loves to travel and play soccer, tennis and golf. He is a former member of Puerto Rico’s Olympic and National Soccer teams. Named DoDEA’s Principal of the Year for SY 08-09, Dr. G’s experiences have brought him closer to the needs of both students and military families at home and abroad.
