The Fort Benning Schools, consisting of six elementary schools and one middle school, provide a wide variety of experiences for students and are committed to offering top quality programs for children living on post. Educational programs are designed to serve the unique needs of military families while remaining comparable to programs offered in Georgia schools. Special emphasis is placed upon accepting children at their current achievement levels and challenging them to progress as much as possible while they are attending the Fort Benning Schools. In addition to the regular curriculum offered in the Fort Benning Schools we also offer programs for: Pre-Kindergarten - The Fort Benning Schools offer a half-day Pre-K program to children who reside on post and who will be four years old on or before September 1, of the current year. Pre-K teachers utilize a student-centered approach and encourage children to develop their abilities as they work in areas focused on computer skills, art activities, creative play, and academic readiness. Parents who live on post should register their child at the neighborhood school. Special Education - Special education programs for children with disabilities are available in the Fort Benning Schools for ages 3-4 and for children in grades Pre-K through 8. Parents of school-age children who are concerned about their child's educational performance should contact their child's classroom teacher. Parents of preschoolers who live on post may refer directly to the Office of Special Education, 545-5520. Gifted/Enrichment Program - Fort Benning Schools' program for gifted students who meet eligibility criteria for gifted or enrichment is based on curriculum that emphasizes higher level thinking skills, creative problem solving skills, development of a strong self concept, aesthetic awareness, and the development of positive interpersonal relations. Instructional Support - All Fort Benning Schools offer Instructional Support services to help accelerate student progress. Students whose standardized test scores indicate a weakness in reading and/or math may qualify to receive additional academic support in an Instructional Support program. English-As-A-Second Language - The English-As-A-Second Language program is designed to assist students whose native language is not English. ESL students from grades K - 8 are served at Faith Middle School and White Elementary School. Students in Pre-K are served in the regular classroom School Health Program - Registered nurses and nursing assistants serve as part of school faculties in the Fort Benning Schools. Each school houses a well-equipped clinic staffed by school personnel prepared to administer first aid and deal with medical emergencies or illness. Vision and hearing screenings are conducted each year for all students. Scoliosis screenings are scheduled for grades 4-8. Counseling Program - Fort Benning Schools have a counseling program in each school. Counselors provide group guidance, individual counseling, and consultation with teachers, students and parents. The school counselor has an opportunity to meet with the students in each school for group lessons in self-understanding, expressing ideas, interpersonal relations, rights and responsibilities, decision making, motivation, and problem solving. Teachers, individual students, or parents can make referrals for school counseling services.
