Absentees & Tardiness
Students must be present to receive the greatest benefit from the school experience. Students should be IN SCHOOL unless illness or an emergency exists, keeping them home. We request that parents please try to schedule medical appointments at times other than during school hours.
Family trips are often invaluable to a child's development, but loss of school time should be taken into consideration before making plans. Consideration should also be given to how well your child is presently doing in school. If he/she is struggling before you leave for an extended vacation, consider how difficult it will be to make up missed work when he/she returns. Teachers are not able to give you everything your child will miss while away; however, the teacher should be notified at least five school days ahead of your departure date. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child completes all make-up work or assignments.
When a child is tardy or has an early dismissal, he or she is missing an important part of his or her educational program. Students who are dismissed from school for a half-day are missing out on valuable class work. The clinics are cooperative about scheduling routine appointments after school hours or during a school vacation break.
Parents may be contacted by telephone for students who are absent or tardy. The sponsor’s commander may be notified in the event of chronic absences.
Tardiness
Students arriving to school after 8:30 are considered tardy and will not be allowed to enter the classroom without a late pass. If your children walk to school each day, please make sure they leave home early enough to arrive to school before 8:30. Students who are late to school are already “behind” when they enter their classroom.
A note from the parent or guardian should be presented on the day of the tardy or the next school day. Any student tardy more than five times during the year will not receive perfect attendance recognition.
Absences
One of the keys to your child’s success at school is regular attendance. Research indicates that poor school attendance and poor academic achievement go hand in hand. You should try to have your child in school every day, and on time for the beginning of instruction. Students coming to school after 11:00 A.M. will be counted absent for the entire day. Students checking out before 11:00 A.M. and not returning will be counted absent for the entire day.
Parents must send notes of explanation to the office when their children return from an absence. Please call the office by 8:30, if your child will be absent from school. When it is necessary for your child to be absent, a note must be written making sure the following is included: a. The student’s full name b. The date or dates of absence c. Reason for absence d. Signature of parent or guardian
SIGNING OUT YOUR CHILD EARLY:
If your child needs to be picked up early from school, please send a note to the teacher that day. The teacher can make sure your child is packed and ready to go when you arrive. We understand that you may not always be able to schedule your child’s appointments after the end of the school day, but we really appreciate it when you can. This keeps your child from missing important parts of school.
Please take your child out of school early only if there is a valid reason. We would like to ask that you not check out your child early at the end of the day just so you can get ahead of the traffic or to avoid the dismissal process. Calling classrooms to ask for students who are checking out is disruptive and we try to keep disruptions to a minimum. (Please don’t go to classrooms to get your children since this too is disruptive.)
