Mrs. Margaret Koger, Gifted Education Teacher at McBride Elementary School and Loyd Elementary School, Fort Benning, has been selected as the GA/ALA DDESS Teacher of the Year for SY 07-08.
Margaret has been an educator for 22 years and has taught in the regular, remedial and gifted education fields. During her tenure, she has assumed many leadership roles.
In 1988, Mrs. Koger was selected and trained as a teacher-fellow with the National Writing Project and conducted staff development classes in the teaching of writing at the local, state, and national levels. She also served three years as the Elementary Representative for the Georgia Council of Teachers of English.
During the mid-1990’s, she began a leadership role in technology integration and piloted technology research projects that were highlighted internationally. In 1999, she served on a panel of teachers selected by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) to facilitate discussion groups on the integration of technology in the curriculum.
At the school level, Mrs. Koger assisted in the implementation of the Partners in Education program. This partnership has won numerous local, state, and national awards, including the Patriotic Award for the State of Georgia in 2003 and the Partnership of the Year Award in 2004. In 2007, the Partners in Education Program at McBride School was named Partnership of the Year by the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
A colleague stated, “Mrs. Koger awakens wonder in her students and challenges them to push themselves toward ever greater achievement and new goals. Very simply, Mrs. Koger works her own brand of magic in her classroom. She is most highly deserving of the title Teacher of the Year.”
We are honored to have Margaret as the GA/AL representative for 2007-08 and know she will represent us with professionalism and enthusiasm.
