School Named after Lt. Edward Ansel White Read about his bravery! He lived with his family at Fort Benning and attended grade school on the post from 1937 to 1939. He entered the United States Military Academy in 1944 after studying one year at Georgia Institute of Technology and was commissioned a second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1948. Following his graduation from Ground General School at Fort Riley, Kansas and The Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the Fifth Cavalry Regiment in Japan where he distinguished himself as a leader and instructor. Immediately after the outbreak of war in Korea on 25 June 1950, Lieutenant White was assigned to Company "F", Fifth Cavalry. The Regiment was quickly alerted and 12 July sailed for Pohangdong, Korea. On 18 July, Company "F" landed and was hurried to Yongdong where it was immediately committed to combat. After participating in this initial action, Lieutenant White's battalion was ordered to the vicinity of Kumchon and assigned the mission of covering the withdrawal of the Division. On 2 August 1950, while leading his men in the execution of this mission, Edward Ansel White was killed in action. For his valiant conduct on the final battlefield, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. |
