The Coat of ArmsCrest: On a blue oval 1 1/8 inches in height, a gold caltrap above a blue scroll with the motto “Forever Forward” in gold lettering. Shield: The color blue is used for Infantry, the gold color symbolizing leadership and achievement. The caltrap is an ancient offensive weapon employed to deny the use of certain pertinent terrain to hostile forces and alludes to the attack, seizure and staying power of the Brigade. Motto: “Forever Forward" History of the 197th Infantry BrigadeThe 197th Infantry Brigade was constituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 197th Infantry Brigade, and assigned to the 99th Division. Organized in November 1921 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Re-designated 23 March 1925 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 197th Brigade. Re-designated 24 August 1936 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 197th Infantry Brigade. Converted and re-designated 12 February 1942 as the 99th Reconnaissance Company, 99th Division Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 198th Infantry Brigade, concurrently converted and re-designated as the 3rd Platoon, 99th Reconnaissance Troop, 99th Division. Troop ordered into active military service 15 November 1942 and reorganized at Camp Van Dora, Mississippi, as the 99th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, an element off the 99th Infantry Division. Reorganized and re-designated 2 August 1943 as the 99th Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized. Inactivated 29 September 1945 at Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts. Converted and re-designated 1 August 1962 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 197th Infantry Brigade, and relieved from assignment to the 99th Infantry Division; concurrently withdrawn from the Army Reserve and allotted to the Regular Army 3rd Platoon, 99th Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized. The 197th Infantry Brigade was activated at Fort Benning on 24 September 1962, by General Order 297, Headquarters, Third United States Army, dated 16 October 1962. The 197th Infantry Brigade participated in campaigns during; World War II in Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe. The 197th Infantry Brigade took up defensive positions along the Kuwaiti border and waited on an Iraqi incursion into Saudi Arabia. In November1990, upon the orders from Central Command, the division prepared itself for offensive action to expel the Iraqi invaders from Kuwait as part of an Allied coalition the likes not seen since World War II. The 197th Infantry Brigade was the only Brigade of the 3d Infantry Division to deploy for participation in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm while serving in the Defense of Saudi Arabia and The Liberation of Kuwait. The 197th Infantry Brigade was inactivated 16 August 1991 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The 197th Infantry Brigade was re-activated on 18 July 2007 simultaneously during the brigade change of command. The Brigade trains and support training of Infantry Soldiers and leaders through subject matter expertise, doctrine development, and experimentation, while supporting OCONUS personnel replacement requirements in order to provide the Army with Soldiers and leaders prepared to fight and win.
