Special Education

Students eligible to attend Wilson Elementary School and identified as meeting established criteria are eleigible for special education services.
Child Find
Special Education services are available to all students including preschoolers. If you have concerns regarding your child's academic, physical, social, or language development, you may contact your child's teacher or the principal. Preschool children ages three and four years with developmental delays, physical disabilities, or speech-language problems may be eligible for services. You may contact the Special Education Office at 706-545-5520 if you are concerned about your preschooler. For infants and todders, ages 0-2, you may contact Educational and Developmental Intervention Services at 706-545-3835.
Gifted / Enrichment Program
The gifted program at Wilson provides enrichment activities to those students who need a little ‘extra’. Though we endeavor to work with the classroom teacher whenever possible, we concentrate on project based learning. So far this year, we have completed studies in the following areas: the summer Olympics, Native Americans of Georgia, Bats and Alternative Energy Sources. Soon we will choose a biome and research its geographic nature, climate, and inhabitants.
As well as enriching our wealth of information, the students in the gifted program will choose a social service project for this year. Last year, we made audio books and delivered them, with portable cassette players to Martin Army Hospital and to Fountain City Nursing Home in Columbus.
Children may be referred for gifted evaluation by their teachers, their Terra Nova scores, or by their parents. If you think your child might qualify for gifted services, please contact the school guidance counselor.
Instructional Support
Instructional Support services help accelerate student progress. Students whose standardized test scores indicate a weakness in reading and/or math may qualify to receive additional academic support in an Instructional Support program.
School Nurse
A registered nurses serves as part of our school faculty . We have a well-equipped clinic staffed by school personnel prepared to administer first aid and deal with medical emergencies or illness. Vision and hearing screenings are conducted each year for all students. Scoliosis screenings are scheduled for grades 4-8. Our nurse will assist you in meeting the medical requirements for DoD school enrollment and any other questions you may have about your childs health care at school.
