Our mission at McNair School is to foster in children a love for books and reading with the end result of our students becoming lifelong readers.  Reading Counts is designed to be used as a motivational tool to encourage students to read for pleasure and to briefly assess their comprehension.

Reading Counts is designed for 2nd grade and above.  It is ONLY appropriate for students who have demonstrated that they are independent readers based on the results of the Scholastic Reading Inventory.

Students can choose to read a Reading Counts book of any genre or length as long as it is within their lexile range.

Students are allowed to use their book as a resource when taking a book quiz.

70% is considered a passing score.  A quiz can be taken 3 times in order to pass.

Quiz results CANNOT be counted as part of a student's grade.

Students cannot be required to participate in the Reading Counts Program, but it is highly encouraged.  A reasonable goal is set for students at each grade level that is aligned with DDESS standards.  McNair's Reading Counts Goals are as follows:

2nd Grade.......................5 books per quarter
3rd Grade.......................5 books per quarter
4th Grade.......................4 books per quarter

A Reading Counts Report for participating students in grades 2-4 is to be sent home to parents at the end of the 2nd and 4th grading periods inside the report card envelope.

Reading Counts makes a positive impact on student achievement and motivates children to read independently.  Please join us as partners in education by encouraging your child to participate.  If you have any questions please contact your child's teacher.
