Second Grade Reading Hints for Choosing Books

Readability: The Five Finger Rule - Remind students that a book needs to be readable for them to understand and enjoy it. That means choosing the right difficulty of text for a particular child at a particular time in their development. After self-selecting a book, ask each child to open it up and begin reading. If they come to a word that is unfamiliar or tricky, teach them to hold up 1 finger. Below are some guidelines to help determine the readability of a book. It is called the 5 Finger Rule.

Easy books- A child can read every word and understand every idea. If a child can read an entire page with 1 or 0 fingers than it is an easy book, and may not be challenging enough.

Just Right books - A child can read most of the words, but not all of them, and they can understand most of the ideas. If a child can read an entire page with 2-3 fingers up, then it is a just right book. This is the ideal text difficulty for most readers.

Challenging Books - ideas are not understood. Meaning breaks down. If a child reads an entire page with 4-5 fingers up, then it is too challenging. This text should be saved until a bit later in a child's literacy journey.

Homework

Home reading is considered part of homework. Please ensure your child reads at least 20 minutes daily.

UPSL

Parents, in Math, the UPSL procedure for Problem Solving is helping our students think about the steps to solving math word problems.

Understand - Read the problem.

Plan - Think about the problem. List any information that may help you solve the problem. What strategy might be the best to use? What operation is needed to solve the problem.

Solve- Pick a strategy and use the listed information to help you solve the problem.

Look Back -Does you answer make sense:  Is it reasonable? Did it answer the question

Box Tops

Please save your Box Tops and bring them to school. Please mark your child's name and my name on the paper or envelope.

Deployments

If you or your spouse is getting ready to deploy please let me know. Sometimes a child's behavior can change during this time and a little understanding is all that is needed. We would like to say a special hello to all of our deployed parents. Thanks for all that you are doing! Stay safe and come home soon!
