PANDA NEWSpandaSept./Oct. 2009

Greetings from our classroom!  Happy School Year 2009!  This month I am doing something a little different for my web page.  Many times I have parents ask me, "What can I do at home to help my child?"  Here is  list of things that I have shared with parents.  It is surely not complete.

#1-- READ, READ, READ! This is one of the most important things you can do to help your child succeed in school.  Ask questions to see if your son or daughter is comprehending.  Let your child see you reading.  You will never regret spending this time with your child!

--Go places and do things together.  Talk about what you've seen.

--Find letters on road signs and brainstorm words that begin with that letter.

--Play a road game called ABC. Try to find letters A-Z on signs, cars, trucks, buses etc.

--Help your child keep a journal during a trip.  Encourage your child to try and write by himself.  It doesn't matter if everything is spelled correctly or not. Ex.  "bus" might be spelled "bs".  This is called inventive spelling.

--Play board games like Candy Land, Hi Ho Cherry-O or Shoots and Ladders.

--Limit Play Station, Nintendo and computer time--children need to play outside and play creatively inside.

--Give 2 and 3 step directions and see if your child can follow them.  Gradually add more steps.

--Make sure your child follows through when given a direction.

--Participate in school activities--let your child know that you think school is important.  An item beginning with the letters we are studying would be make an excellent Show and Tell item.

--Help your child choose an object for our classroom alphabet board.  He or she will remember the letter sound if a personal contribution has been made.  The alphabet board goes along with the letters we are investigating.  (see your monthly calendar)

--Remind your child to bring in an item for Show and Tell each Friday.  This is an excellent way to increase verbal skills.

--Check your child's folder daily.

--Look for words that we've covered in class on signs and in print.

ENJOY YOUR CHILD.  THESE PRECIOUS FIRST YEARS PASS SO QUICKLY!

Letters we are investigating...

Ii, Ss, Gg, Oo, Ff, Rr, Hh, Ee, Xx

We will be implementing a new reading series on November 2nd. Watch for news about this!  :)

Remember...If you ever have a question or comment, please don't hesitate to call, come by or send a note.  I'm at school until at least 3:30 each day and I welcome your input.  We have a happy, relaxed classroom atmosphere and I can honestly say that enjoy every day I spend with your children. I want them to have WONDERFUL memories of kindergarten!

THANK YOU to all who are serving our country around the world.  We appreciate you so very much. STAY SAFE!  Love, The Pandas
