TESTING TIPS FOR PARENTS

Make sure your child receives a good nights sleep and wakes up in plenty of time on the morning of the test. You don’t want your child to feel rushed.

Be sure to give your child a good breakfast. Studies show that students who have eaten a good breakfast score much better on tests.

Many children already feel nervous before a test. Try not to do or say things that will make your child feel any more nervous.

Tell your child that the test is only a test. It does not measure how special or important the child is.

Remind your child that your love does not depend on how well he or she scores on the test.

Tell your child that the main purpose of the test is to help teachers find out how to best teach the child.

During the school year, show your child that you care about what is happening at school. Studies show that children with parents who take part in their learning do better in school.

Praise your child, even if he or she does not do well on the test. Remind your child that everything takes practice.

Tests results can be hard for anyone to understand. If you have any questions about your child’s scores, talk to your child’s school counselor.

Remember, test scores are only one source of information about a child. Test sores should always be evaluated in light of other observations, assessments, and your child’s ongoing performance in school.
