Butner
School offers a continuum of special education services for children. Special
education consists of specially designed instruction and /or support
that a student may need in order to reach his or her potential. These
services at Butner are available to children ages three through fourth
grade who
are eligible under DDESS guidelines. A student may receive services in
a general education classroom, on a "pull-out" basis in a resource room, or in
a self-contained setting. The service delivery model depends on each child's
specific needs.
The special education
staff at Butner possesses expertise in many areas to address the
unique needs of the students they serve. Our
school currently houses four special educators, a full time Speech
Therapist, an itinerant Occupational Therapist (with an assistant),
itinerant Physical Therapist (with an assistant). Services
by the School Psychologist are available as needed.
Parents play an integral
role in the decision making process regarding a child's special needs. Please
feel free to contact your child's case manager regarding any questions
or concerns you may have. If your child does not yet have a
case manager, please contact the case study chairperson.
When changing school
districts the IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) is a vital piece
of information to supply to the receiving school. When possible,
please supply this information upon registration. This will
ensure that your child's needs are addressed promptly. Copies
of previous reports, testing, and eligibility meetings are also helpful.
