The instructional program at Butner School is based on an integrated curriculum model with skills taught in context. The reading program is literature-based instruction. Math and science programs stress hands-on activities that are relevant to the daily lives and experiences of students. All students in kindergarten through fourth grade participate in art, music, physical education, media, and guidance classes.

Butner school has two computer labs. Clusters of computers are also located in each classroom to enhance the instructional program. The Reading Counts Program is in use in all 1st-4th grade classrooms.

When appropriate, teachers make referrals to specialists for evaluation to determine if support services are needed. A multidisciplinary team approach is used to identify students and meet their unique needs with the support of the following services:

  • Gifted Education
  • ESL (English as a Second Language)
  • Homebound Instruction
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Guidance Services
  • Reading Resource/ Instructional Support
  • Specific Learning Disabilities
  • Speech Therapy
