Holbrook Elementary School

Holbrook Elementary School was named in honor of General Lucius R. Holbrook who was born in Arkansas, Wisconsin in 1875. General Holbrook organized the first training school for army bakers and cooks in 1907. He wrote the first cook's manual for the army in 1911. He invented the army field oven. In World War I he was assigned to the 7th Field Artillery unit, which fired the first artillery shell used in launching our assault against the Germans in France. He commanded Camp Bragg from May - July, 1919 and August, 1929 to October 1930. At that time, Camp Bragg was the largest Field Artillery post in the United States Army. |

Holbrook Elementary is a Pre-K through 4th grade school located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Fort Bragg is a federal installation and all students are dependents of military personnel living on this army post. The school opened its doors in 1959.
- Total enrollment is 354 students.
- Our student population is very transient with a one third turnover each year.
- This fall, Holbrook will host three fourth grade classes and one pre-school class that will shift to the new elementary school in Linden Oaks when that school opens.
- There are 17 (21) classroom teachers, .5 Gifted Edcuation teacher, 1 Information Specialist, 1 Music teacher, 1 Art teacher, 1 P.E. teacher, 1 Reading Resource teacher, 1 Guidance Counselor, 1.5 Exceptional Children's teachers, .5 Hearing Impaired teacher, 1 Nurse, 1 Educational Technologist, 1 Speech Therapist, and a part time specialist for the English Second Language program for a total of 31 certified staff members.
- There is a diverse cultural background in the community with many of the parents from foreign countries.
School Procedures:
The Superintendent of Schools will issue instructions for school closings, late openings, and early dismissals. These will be announced over radio and television stations. The radio stations include WFAI - 1230 AM, WFLB - 1490 AM, WFNC - 640 AM, WQSM - 98 FM, WRAL - 101.5 FM, WKML - 95.7 FM and WDKS - 103 FM. Television stations include Cable TV Channel 2, WECT-TV Channel 6, WRAL-TV Channel 5, and WTVD-TV Channel 11. The Fort Bragg Schools are registered with a new web service that posts closures, delays and major changes. Log into www.cancellations.com and specify the Fort Bragg zip code. You will be asked to specify the radius of the search area in miles. Then you will told if there are any delays. Cumberland County and Hoke County schools are also using this service.
Students should arrive no earlier than 8:05 AM on school mornings. They will wait outside unless the weather makes this inappropriate. Students will enter the classrooms at 8:10. The tardy bell will ring at 8:25 AM. Students arriving after the tardy bell must be signed in by a parent in the office. School will be dismissed at 2:45 PM. On Wednesdays, students will be dismissed at 1:35 PM. Students are expected to use sidewalks and designated paths and street crossings. They may ride bicycles, if they have been instructed in bike safety and courtesy. If they ride bikes, they need to secure the bikes with locks and leave them secured to the bike racks. No skateboards or roller blades are allowed.
Holbrook School maintains high expectations for all of its students.
Home Reading Program:
Students at Holbrook are expected to read every evening at home. Students who meet their home reading goal will receive a coupon for a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut at the end of each month. This "Book It" program will run from October through March. Parents are encouraged to read to and with their children.
Dress Code:
Students should use good judgment to dress appropriately for weather and activities. See the Discipline Policy regarding appropriate clothing. On Fridays, students are invited to wear the school colors (blue and white or red and white) or a Holbrook T-shirt. (The PTA sells Holbrook T-shirts and other items.)
