3D AERIAL PORT SQUADRON EMBLEM
ORIGIN: Organized 16 March 1953 at Donaldson AFB, SC
Reassigned to Altus AFB, OK 29 June 1953
Moved to Pope AFB, NC 12 August 1954
MISSION : The primary mission of 3 APS is to operate a fixed tactical air terminal facility supporting airland and aerial delivery of personnel and equipment. 3 APS also supports the training, exercise, and contingency operations of collocated, Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command and Army Airborne Forces.
SIGNIFICANCE: The emblem is symbolic of the squadron and its worldwide, short-notice mission. “Jiminy Cricket” floating earthward uses his umbrella as a parachute to symbolize the role of the aerial delivery section of the squadron. In his other hand, he holds a load adjuster to symbolize the mission of the loadmasters. “Jiminy Cricket’s” cheerful demeanor reflects the spirit and can-do attitude of the squadron personnel.
HISTORY: Emblem was designed by Airman Second Class Robert W. Dunlap, who won a contest among the personnel of the squadron in September 1959. The patch was copyright released by Walt Disney for $1.00 and future consideration.
MOTTO: AD ASTRA PER ARDUA--To the stars through difficulties--approved 24 February 1971.
