Your child’s reading counts report is sent home.
Pope Elementary has set an annual goal for 3 rd grade students of attaining 60 points, while maintaining a 80% or higher average on the quizzes.
I have noticed that some students are really motivated to try and attain or surpass this goal in addition to achieving 80% or higher on the quizzes, but there are also students on the other end of the spectrum.
In my class I do not take away recess for students not taking tests, nor do the test results impact grades. It is hoped that students would want to do reading counts for the following reasons:
*Students would have a sense of accomplishment; be able to monitor his or her own progress; use points to spend in the reading counts store; and read books geared to his or her own level*
Please take the time to review the report and discuss the results shown with your child. Your child may fall into one of the two categories that I have discussed above and may need your encouragement. If you would like I can run a copy of your child’s report every two weeks, rather than every quarter. Please let me know.
Guidelines - students can only take tests on their level, a little above for a challenge, or a little below for an easy read.
For example if a student is in the 500 lexiles, they can take a test in 600s for challenge, or 400s for an easier read. So basically they have 3 color choices to choose from when they go to the library. Do they always have to check out a Reading Counts (RC) book? No- I always suggest choosing 1 RC and 1 freebie, because there are a lot of other good non RC books in our library too. What if my child fails a test? Students can retake the test up to 3 times, but must wait 24 hours before retaking. They are to re-read the book and re-take the quiz.
