This Week…on going

Kid’s Inc News

January 3, 2008

Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable winter break. Today and Friday will be review days. We will review rules, expectations, and learned skills. The class will practice working in small groups and partners for discussions, investigations, and reading. We will sing our vowel sounds, practice addition story problems, work with the seasons, and animal classification. In addition, I will assess student written expression through journal writing using the Writing Checklist.

I am going to begin setting time limits for journal writing. Everyone will have 5 minutes of planning time and 20 minutes of writing time. This will encourage those who quickly complete their writing to add more details and review their writing and set a clear expectation for others to complete this task in a timely manner. After I have looked at the journals, they may continue writing the entry if they chose. I’ll send next week’s spelling concept and trick words home tomorrow.

  • There will not be homework until Monday, January 7 th
  • Please dress your child appropriately for the weather
  • I have lunch money stapled in pink paper from before break. It does not have a name. Please send a note if it belongs to your child.
  • I also have popcorn money without a name. I called those I could reach before break, but it has not been claimed.

Wilson Fundations

Wilson Fundations is a multisensory approach to learning. It involves explicit instruction-learning through modeling and application, systematic, motor memory learning, repetition, and feedback. Concepts are introduced in small increments and practiced/reviewed frequently to ensure mastery.

Fundations addresses letter formation, phonemic awareness, phonics/word structure, reading/spelling, irregular words, vocabulary/dictionary, fluency/comprehension, and written composition. These are the skills that make up the foundation of readers/writers. Your child will work toward automaticity- accurate and speedy word recognition.

Snack

Your child may bring a drink and healthy snack for our snack break. Please write your child’s name or student # (will explain later) on each item.

A water bottle may be kept on a child’s desk. Please do not freeze because the condensation creates havoc with paper. We do have a water fountain in the classroom.
