The staff and community of Pope Elementary are committed to the development of each child; fostering their ability to “SOAR”.

2006-2007 S/Y Overview of School Improvement Plan

Goal: All students will demonstrate growth in critical thinking skills in literacy.

Essence: All students will use critical thinking skills which demonstrate the process of using information to form conclusions. This process will be evidenced by the students’ use of critical thinking skills and strategies, scientific inquiry process, and reading strategies.

Intervention/Strategy - All students will be provided with opportunities to increase their cognitive skills in literacy.

  • Implement a school wide home reading program.
    • Reading teacher presented information to the PTA about implementation of a home reading program.
    • Each parent and student signed an agreement to reach a reading goal for the year.
    • Monthly home reading logs are turned in and recorded in the school log.
    • Students are rewarded monthly through the Pizza Hut program.
    • Monthly recognition is given to the classes that earn a minimum of 85% participation.
  • Integrate thematic units across the curriculum to include reading strategies.
    • Publish and share strategies with staff
    • Implementation of Project Based Learning activities
  • Introduce school wide, Big 6 or Super 3 research skills.
    • Research skills are introduced in first grade.
    • Media specialist/Technologist/classroom teachers will collaborate to teach rearch skills.
    • Dsiplay posters with research steps in each classroom.
  • Utilize technology to enhance Reading Instruction.
    • Read 180 – Intensive reading intervention to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below proficient.
    • Reading Counts – A software program that manages and motivates students independent reading.
    • Scholastic Reading Inventory – A fast and accurate way to assess student reading levels and monitor reading progress.
    • Wiggle Works
  • Implement the 6+1 Writing Process as a major progression focusing across the grade levels.
    • Provide professional development through Teachers as Readers using the 6+1 Traits of Writing textbook.
    • Pilot a pre-implementation phase of the 6+1 Traits of Writing
    • Establish base-line data with 6+1 Writing materials
    • Commence 06-07 school year with 6+1 Staff Development
    • Implement 6+1 Writing Traits into the curriculum
    • Establish library of professional resources with 6+1 Writing Materials.

Intervention/Strategy - All students will be provided with opportunities to develop higher-level thinking and logical reasoning skills to be used in problem solving.
