Chapter 2 Matter - Completed August 2009
Learning Goal: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure of matter.
1. Using the periodic table, chart elements based on the Atomic number, Mass number, the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
2. Differentiate between covalent bonds, ionic bonds, and hydrogen bonds
3. Calculate the density of a cube given the mass and volume of the cube
4. List the four states of matter
Chapter 24 Solar System - Completed September 2009
Learning Goal: The student will evaluate the scale and structure of the solar system
1. Summarize the properties of the solar system that support the theory of its formation along with the planets.
2. List the planets in their relative order from the Sun
3. Contrast the between inner planets and outer planets
Chapter 23 Sun-Moon-Earth System - Completed September 2009
Learning Goals: The student will explain how the interactions of the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon cause the day-night cycle, the seasons, the phases of the Moon, and eclipses.
1. Differentiate between rotation and revolution
2. Identify phases of the Moon and their cause
3. Label the positions of the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon during a solar and lunar eclipse.
4. Identify properties and features of the Moon that make it unique among other moons in the solar system.
Chapter 25 Stars and Galaxies - Completed October 2009
Learning Goals: The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure and properties of the universe.
1. Show the relationship between distance and parallax
2. Label the layers of the Sun
3. Explain the formation of elements that results from nuclear fusion
4. Using an H-R diagram, classify the stars
5. Sequence the life-cycle of the star
6. Explain how gravity and motion affect the formation and shapes of galaxies
7. Summarize the evidence that supports the big bang theory and the expansion of the universe
Chapter 22 Exploring Space: Completed November 2009
Learning Goals: The student will learn how space is explored with telescopes, rockets, probes, satellites, and space shuttles.
1. Interactions of Energy and Matter: Electromagnetic waves have energy and can transfer energy when they interact with matter
2. Scientific Inquiry is a desire to understand the natural world
3. Technological design is a need to meet human needs and solve human problems
4. Individuals and society must decide on proposals involving new research and the introduction of new technologies in society
5. Decisions involve assessment of alternatives, risks, costs, and benefits
6. Individuals and teams have contributed to the scientific enterprise
Chapter 15 Atmosphere
Learning Goals: The student will learn that Earth's atmosphere is a thin layer of gases that keeps Earth's temperature in a range that can support life.
1. Identify the gases in Earth's Atmosphere
2. List the layers in Earth's Atmosphere, beginning at Earth's surface
3. Summarize the cause and effects of convection within Earth's atmosphere
4. Explain the relationship between the rotation of the Earth and the pattern of wind belts
5. Summarize the evidence for the likely impact of human activities on the atmosphere, including ozone holes and smog
