Barkley Elementary School
4720 Polk Rd.
Ft. Campbell, KY 42223
The school is named after Alben
William Barkley, who was Vice President of the United States (1949-1953)
under President Harry S. Truman. He was born in Graves County, KY on Nov.
24, 1877 and died suddenly while making a speech at Lexington, VA on April
30, 1956.
The initial structure was completed in October 1955. The
first expansion came in 1958. Over the years the school evolved from
kindergarten-first classes to grade six. The present structure, last
edition completed in 2003, houses children from ages three through grade
five. The school's organization complies with DoDEA Standards.
Barkley serves the children of military personnel; a large
percentage of the students come from households where one or both parents
have a military career.
The school's curriculum includes regular
education, special education and programs for gifted students. The
programs are based on an integrated curriculum where skills are taught in
context.
Teachers actively participate in staff development.
Universities are involved with the school and frequently request student
teaching slots. First year teachers must complete the Kentucky Internship
Program for Kentucky certification.
Barkley's School Improvement
Team is composed of parents, teachers and the school's administrators.
Team members are instrumental in developing action plans to meet benchmark
goals and provide leadership. Learning Community Leaders organize
activities and share information foreach grade level.
Barkley
School has a strong commitment to the School-Home Partnership. Volunteers
support school activities by volunteering in classrooms, assisting with
special events and being partners in the school improvement process.
Barkley, as a test site for the Presidential Technology
Initiative, has the opportunity to discover and implement additional
learning strategies that embrace the
potential of technology.
