School Policies School Hours:
Pre-Planned Absences Being sensitive to the military community, parents can make prior arrangements with their schools on pre-planned absences. Parents wishing to take a child out of school for leave, permissive TDY or other similar reason must coordinate five days in advance with the child's teacher. The appropriate principal will approve or disapprove the preplanned absence. Elementary Attendance Procedures In order for students to achieve their highest potential as learners they must be present during classroom instruction. This is extremely important in elementary schools when new learning often builds on the previous days teachings. While school attendance is emphasized in all Fort Campbell elementary schools it is also acknowledged that it is ultimately the responsibility of parents to insure that elementary children are present in school. Therefore, it is Fort Campbell policy to work with parents to promote and encourage regular full-time school attendance and to minimize absenteeism. When parents make decisions about attendance they hopefully do so in a manner that insures that children do not miss class without good cause. Examples of appropriate student absences include illnesses (especially if the reason could be a contagious disease) and doctors appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of school hours. Family trips should be planned during school recess and vacation periods. While it is recognized that there may be other legitimate reasons for missing school all absences must be weighed against the loss of instructional time. Upon a childs return to class parents are to provide the classroom teacher with a written note explaining the reason for the absence. The student delivers the note to the teacher and where appropriate collects required make-up work. All make-up work must be completed and returned by the date established by the teacher. Normally the number of days allowed for submission of make-up work will not exceed the number of consecutive days of the absences. Field trips are not counted as absences but make-up work expectations apply. Discipline: Rationale and Philosophy of Discipline The Fort Campbell School District believes a strong educational program requires a commitment to the maintenance of appropriate student discipline in the schools. This commitment is twofold. First it includes a provision for a level of student conduct which insures safety and enhances teaching and learning. Second it provides for the teaching of self discipline skills which the student can use throughout life. The responsibility for meeting this commitment is shared by all members of the educational community working cooperatively with parents. The most effective form of discipline is self-discipline. However, when a student chooses to act inappropriately school personnel will consider all circumstances and the individual needs of the student when administering disciplinary action. A primary focus in the area of student discipline is the teaching of appropriate behavior and the promotion of self-discipline. Administration of the Discipline Code This Code of Student Conduct shall apply equally to all students PreK-12 and to all schools within the Fort Campbell School System in accordance with provisions made by Federal Law. The Student Code of Discipline will be applied to all school sponsored activities. Fort Campbell faculty and staff operate on the premise that students will be expected to adhere to the standards of good school behavior and citizenship. The faculty and staff are charged with the responsibility of maintaining good school conduct. It is essential that requests for improvements in student behavior by school personnel be respectfully obeyed. The goal to have students develop self-respect, understanding of others and an acceptance of the rules governing the school. Health Services: Examinations/Immunizations School physical examinations and immunizations against communicable diseases are required of all Early Childhood students and/or first grade students upon initial entrance to Barkley Elementary School. Immunization against communicable diseases are required of all students at Fort Campbell. This is mandated by Kentucky Law. Kentucky immunization certificates may be obtained by taking the student's shot record to the Immunization Clinic, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital. Transfer students are required to present an immunization certificate certifying protection against communicable disease at the time of their enrollment. Clinic Nurse* The Barkley Elementary School clinic has a registered nurse on duty each school day to help with any health needs of students that may arise during the school day and to maintain health records. *Check out the Health Services tab for more information. Health Records contain:
Illness If a student becomes ill or injured the teacher will allow the student to report to the clinic. The student must have a nurse referral form before going to the clinic. Students who become ill or injured will not be allowed to go home unless a parent is first contacted by the nurse or office personnel. Medications Administration of medication should be scheduled in order to avoid whenever possible the necessity of its being dispensed during school hours. However, when it becomes necessary for medication to be given at school the following rules are followed: • No medication will be given without a doctors orders for medication. • Students are not to keep any medication themselves during school hours. • Medications should be taken to the nurse with a note from the parent or guardian along with the doctor's orders. • Medications must be labeled with the student's name, dosage and time to be administered. • Only the school nurse or office personnel are to administer medications. • It is the responsibility of the student to go to the clinic at the time his/her medication is to be taken. Homework Policy The Board believes that homework has a positive influence on student learning when it has purpose and clarity and when there is a common base of understanding between parents and teachers. Homework may be used for preparation, practice, extension and creativity including analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The amount of homework should depend upon the age level of the student and individual student needs. (School Board Policy 3230) The school day is a vigorous requirement for an elementary student. Therefore, when homework is assigned it should be one of the following conditions: • Make-up work due to absence. • Additional time needed to complete learning task. • As a special enrichment activity. • As a reinforcement activity mutually agreed upon by parents and teachers. Parents are urged to actively involve themselves with their child's school work. Some specific ways parents can help their child do the best possible job on homework are: • Show an interest in the school work your child brings home. • Provide a time and place for you child to complete their homework. • Ask questions if problems occur and really listen to the answers you receive. • Check to see that work is complete. • Encourage your child to do his/her best and praise a job well done. • Stay in close communication with teachers. Students are responsible for completing their homework. These steps can help students be successful with homework. • Write down the assignment and select necessary materials before leaving school. • Set aside a place for studying. • Plan specific times for studying. • Complete work so that it is neat and legible. Teachers have responsibility to their students and the role homework plays in making each student successful. • Teachers will evaluate homework assignments in a timely manner. • Parents and students will be periodically informed of the student's academic progress and mastery of learning objectives. • Teachers will provide clear, concise directions for the completion of homework assignments. • Homework will be coordinated by the member of the child's teaching team. The cooperation of parents, teachers and students is required. Assignment of homework should be clear and accompanied by communication to parents. It should be recognized that not all homework needs to take the form of written assignments. Some homework, especially in the primary program should involve students in reading to their parents and vice versa or in taking part in cultural and creative activities. PCS-ing Parents are encouraged to give the school at least a one week notice as to when the child's lat day of school will be. Parents can sign out and pick up the student's record in the office on the child's last day. Please contact the school secretary with your PCS information.
