Programs of Interest

Andre C. Lucas Elementary School was opened in August 1997. It is a beautiful, modern, facility serving students in pre-kindergarten (age 4) through grade 5.

The Pre-K program is a half day program with the morning session beginning at 8:00AM and ending at 11:00AM and the afternoon session beginning at 11:50AM and ending at 2:50PM. Kindergarten is a full day program. Grades K through 5 attend school from 8:25AM through 3:10PM. The Lucas Elementary School curriculum is common to all Fort Campbell elementary schools, supports DoDEA improvement initiatives, and is based on national standards.

In addition to the core curriculum offered in Language Arts-Speaking/Listening, Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies,  Lucas Elementary School offers physical education, music education, and art instruction to all students in grades K-5. The school also has two computer labs and 6 mini-labs in which age appropriate instruction is provided. We provide services for gifted education, English-as-a-Second-language, and speech. The Information Center provides a well-rounded library/media program. We have Specialists for Art, Computer, GE, Math/Science, Music, Physical Education, and Reading/Language Arts.

Our school has a Special Ed staff that provides programs for hearing impaired children, early childhood handicapped children, and children with moderate to severe disabilities. We have two guidance counselors, two speech therapists, and a school psychologist who provide group and individual sessions, as well as specialized testing when needed. We also have Resource, PSCD, ESL, HI, and Speech programs in our school.

Our clubs and extra curricular programs include a science club, academic tutors, math tutors, Operation Hero, chess club, Family Reading nights, and chorus.

An implemented “Character Education” program during SAS time reflects our commitment to cultivating good citizens. We have a program that teaches 15 core values such as caring, citizenship, cooperation, courage, fairness, good judgment, honesty, integrity, leadership, loyalty, perseverance, respect, responsibility, self-discipline and understanding.

A quarterly All Star assembly is provided to the Best All Stars each quarter from each classroom. Parents of the “All Stars” take part in the quarterly celebration. All Star themes encourage basic personal, social and civic values. Classroom teachers integrate the themes into the curriculum, giving students ample time to practice these positive qualities.

Our upper grades participate in two service projects. We have been collecting soda can pull-tabs for a few years now to donate to the Nashville Ronald McDonald House. This house is a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children who are receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment at a Nashville area hospital. We also participate in recycling throughout the building. Students collect paper and soda cans to recycle. These service projects done by the students and staff at Lucas have been worthwhile, fun and fulfilling. We will continue to do them this coming year and appreciation any donations from individuals, units, or batallions.

Scholastic Reading Counts is a comprehensive program that motivates students to read and helps their teachers monitor and assess student performance. Reading goals give students something to strive for. Students make their own reading choices from fiction and nonfiction books that appeal to their interest. Certificates and rewards encourage students to keep reading. Self-administered quizzes test whether students have read and understood the book. A 15-30 question database per quiz enables students to re-take quizzes if necessary and receive different questions. Achievement test practice quizzes help students practice and develop the 13 essential reading sills tested throughout the nation. This program motivates students to read books that will improve their reading skills. They build critical thinking and comprehension skills. Parents can help their children by encouraging them to read, providing a quiet place and a regular time to read and ask questions about what they are reading.
