Assessments
OF Learning
DDESS uses a balanced
assessment system including assessments of learning and assessments for learning
to drive the school
improvement process and help each student succeed.
Assessment OF learning are those assessments
that happen after learning is supposed to have occurred to
determine if it did. This type of data is used in monitoring
student achievement and evaluating system-wide progress toward
the goals of the DoDEA
Community Strategic Plan.
Standardized Testing
One of the most common types of assessment
OF learning in public schools is the standardized test. Standardized
testing results are:
- Often a major force in shaping public perception about
the quality of our schools.
- Used by educators to help improve teaching and learning
and to evaluate programs and schools.
- Used to generate the data on which policy decisions are
made.
- Administered system-wide
annually in compliance with 20 USC 92 4 and DoDEA
Regulation 2000.6 (pdf).
- One of the many types of data used in DDESS schools.
DDESS Schools administer both
norm-referenced and criterion-referenced achievement tests. In
addition to promoting accountability,
assessments of student achievement provide valuable data
that can be analyzed to:
- Improve
instruction
- Measure program success and effectiveness
- Understand
if what we are doing is making a difference.
- Guide
curriculum development and revision.
See DDESS System-wide Assessments for a table listing the
standardized tests used system-wide in DDESS, the grade levels
tested, and the time frame in which the tests are given.

A Note About No Child Left Behind.
DoDEA schools are funded entirely by the U.S. Department
of Defense. Therefore, the No
Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act,
while a valuable educational initiative, is not applicable
to DoDEA schools. The DoDEA
CSP provides the strategic
direction for all DoDEA schools.
Although our schools
are not bound to the NCLB law, we are committed to embracing
the spirit of NCLB. In fact there are many similarities
between the pillars of NCLB and the goals of the DoDEA CSP.
