Welcome to Mrs. A's Class

Mission Statement

As an educator of young children, I believe in the development of students in the following areas: intellectual, social, and physical.  I believe all children can learn, and I seek to provide a classroom atmosphere whereby children feel safe.  It is very important for all students to see themselves as part of a classroom community where we help and encourage one another.  Our classroom is characterized as a “Community of Learners.”

The Curriculum

Spelling – Spelling test are given every Friday.  A new list of spelling words will be written on Homework Assignment Sheet each Monday.  Students are expected to study spelling words daily.

Word Study – Word - Solving Strategies.

Writing- Handwriting, Creative Writing, and Daily Oral Language.

Reading – Students will be required to read out loud to a parent for at least 15 minutes daily.  Once this activity is completed, parent must sign a reading log verifying that you have listened to your child read.  Please check student’s comprehension by asking questions as student progresses in the book.  Students will be given a reading textbook.  Students’ textbook is entitled Literacy Place and is published by Scholastic, Inc.

Math - The mathematics program will equip students with the ability to apply skills, think critically, and creatively and develop habits that encourage life-long learning.  The areas of concentration will include concepts, operations, measurement, problem-solving and geometry.  We have a discussion of the Meeting Board each morning, which includes some everyday mathematical concepts.  Students' math book is published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.

Units of Study

Science –  Koalas, Animals, Penguins, Weather, Planets, Seasonal Activities, Magnets, Environment, Matter, Plants & Insects

Social Studies – Classroom Community/Friendship, Schools Long Ago, Cultural Diversity, Map Skills, Continents, Famous People & Women in History, Country and City

Throughout the year students will be required to do book reports and work on special projects.

Homework Policy

The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills which have been taught in the classroom.  Homework assignment will be posted in the classroom everyday.  Homework assignments will be copied from the board into the Homework Agenda Book which is provided by the school.  Homework is to be completed and brought to class everyday.  Monday – Thursday are the days homework will be given.  Homework will be given on the weekend if the student gets behind in his/her schoolwork.

Classwork Folders

Classwork folders will be sent home every Monday.  An informal progress report and the student’s classwork for the week will be in the folder.  Please sign and return the progress report in the classwork folder.  You may keep the week’s worth of work.

Classwork Management

Since lifelong success depends, in part, on self-discipline, a discipline plan has been developed which affords every student guidance in making good decisions about their behavior, and thus an opportunity to learn in a positive, nurturing class environment.  Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her growth.  I know that together we will make a difference in this process.

Parent Teacher Communication 

It is my belief that positive interaction between teacher and parent strengthens the feeling of support all children need for success in school.  It has been my goal each year to create an atmosphere of open communication regarding your child’s progress and behavior.  If at any time you wish to express a comment, a concern, or to ask a question about your child, the classroom, or the school, please send a note or call by phone.  If you call, please call during my planning time or directly before/after school.

How Parents Can Help Their Children

  • Provide a quiet place to study
  • Provide materials to help with homework such as:               encyclopedias,dictionaries, glue, crayons, scissors, pencils , and paper.
  • Read to your child, and allow them to ask questions.

  • Have your child read to you.

  • Praise or compliment your child for small successes.

  • Play word and sound games with your child.

  • Provide books for your child to read.

  • Have a definite time for study and to do homework.(Use the same time everyday)

  • If your child does not have homework assigned by the teacher, see that he/she reads and does some learning activity during his study time.

  •  Drill your child daily on the basic addition and subtraction facts that are sent home.  

  •  Help your child develop a positive self-concept so that he will have a desire to achieve in all areas. 

  • Be a positive model for your child.  Practice what you preach.

  •  Expect the best from your child and let him know it. (Don’t threaten)

  •  Talk to your child about what goes on in school.

  •  Help your child with homework, but don’t do it for him.
