Welcome to Pierce Terrace Elementary School! We emphasize reading, writing and math concepts and skills. Except for rare cases, children come to us with a wealth of language and literacy capabilities. What child does not recognize familiar signs in the community, e.g. STOP, EXIT, McDonalds, Burger King, Toys R’ Us, and written names of family members? When children recognize these words, it indicates that they are developing a sense of reading, and often they attempt to write these words in a way that makes sense to them. Therefore, every child coming through the door is a “Reader” and together we need to provide support and assistance to help them expand upon their use, recognition, and COMPREHENSION of words. After all, that is what “reading” is all about – understanding! Let’s continue that path to literacy achievement!
