What's Happening in Mrs. W's Class?
         "Home of the Eagles"

Reminders

Happy New Year!!!

It is hard to believe, but we are now beginning our downhill journey in Fifth Grade.

I'd like to also remind you to check agenda books every night.

Look at what we're learning!

Reading

We have been reading lots of wonderful books in our classroom and I want you to know that your child is an awesome reader!!! Ask them about the books we have read as a group.

Please make sure they read 30 minutes every night and remember to sign their W.E.B sheet, which stands for Wonderfully Exciting Books, each night. Our" Genre of the month" is Biographies. I have also increased weekly reading to 210 minutes, which equals the 30 minutes nightly. Write your initials after each night of reading. This is a graded assignment so please ensure that it is turned in.

Math

We have been working on division with 2 digit divisors.  Please help your child with their multiplication facts.   THere is an activity that is fun, you can use a deck of cards to practice times tables.  All you will need are the number cards.  Turn over two cards and have them multiply the two numbers.  If they get it right they get to keep the cards.  See how many they can get right and write down the ones they miss.  This activity will be a great help!!

Science

In Science we are reviewing the forces that affect motion.  We will also be talking about machines that make task easier.  The students will investigate two main concepts: 1. simple machines can make work easier by reducing the force, or the direction of force needed to move something and 2.  trade-offs between the amount of force and distance involved when using simple machines.  Students will learn about several different types of simple machines, and look closely at how these machines make tasks easier.  They will also talk about how people in the past used simple machines to build enormous structures.

Don't Forget!

Extra, Extra Read All About It!!

*I hope you have had a chance to read over the information brochure about GradeSpeed.  This a great way to track how your child is doing in school.  I will try to have new grades put in as soon as possible.  Send me an email to let me know that you had a chance to look it and this website over!!!

*Detentions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40pm-3:15pm
