A Look Ahead

Cold and flu season is quickly approaching. Remember these common sense guidelines:

* Wash your hands frequently

* Get plenty of rest.

* Drink lots of fluids.

* Try to eat right, and don't forget that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day.

Health Room Guidelines for ill students at school:

  • 1. Has a cold in the contagious stage. Child should remain home, but if lasting longer than 10 days and not improving, seek medical attention.
  • 2. Has a cough that interfers with sleep during the night, or coughing up colored mucus. Productive coughs should seek physician.
  • 3. Has a sore throat or swollen neck glands accompanied by a fever over 100 degrees.
  • 4. Has an earache accompanied by fever over 100 degrees. If the ear has any type of drainage the child should see a physician, WITH OR WITHOUT accompanying elevated temperature.
  • 5. Has red eyes accompanied by ANY type of drainage. If the drainage is yellow in color the child should see a physician.
  • 6. Has had a fever over 100 drgrees during the past 24 hours.
  • 7. Has had vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours accompanied by ANY elevated temperature.  A child who has had 3 loose bowel movements or vomited 3 times in the past 12 hours should not attend school WITH OR WITHOUT accompanying elevated temperature.
  • 8. Ear infections without fever-do not need to be excluded from school, but the child needs to get medical treatment and follow-up.Untreated ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss.
  • 9. Rash: body rash, especially with fever or itching.
  • 10. Has had headlice or scabies until prescribed measures have been completed.
  • **11. Child must be fever-free (less than 100 degrees) for 24 hours without use of Tylenol or Motrin, before returning to school.
  • ** If your child shows any of the above symptoms at school, it will be necessary to pick him/her up from school. Bringing a child to school with any of the above symptoms puts other children and staff at risk of getting sick.  If all parents keep their sick children at home, we will have stronger, healthier, and happier children. While we regret any inconvenience this may cause, in the end this means fewer lost workdays and less illness for parents too.
