The design and build contract for the new high school project was awarded to the Barton Malow Company in August 2007. The company was among five contractors that bid on the $18.1 million Military Construction project. Of that amount, construction funding totals approximately $16 million.
The project manager of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, said that Barton Malow is “a top five education builder that primarily focuses on design-build delivery.
“The new Fort Knox High School - a two story facing Dixie Street - will unite the existing Vocational School with the current gymnasium, creating a connected campus,” he said.
The new building, with a 462-student capacity, will feature a metal roof, a brick facade with masonry accents, and recessed lockers to improve movement of students between classes.
Serving students in grades 9-12, Fort Knox High School was constructed in 1958. Building additions were completed in 1961 and 1966. A new library and intramural complex were constructed in 1987. The Vocational Annex was constructed in 1989.
The site plan calls for replacement of 71,510 square feet. The plan includes:
● 20 classrooms; 12 network computer drops per room
● 900 square feet per classroom
● Two computer labs
● Commons Area
● Geothermal heating and air conditioning
● Specialized functional areas for art, band, science labs, and technology courses
The Groundbreaking Ceremony was held April 23, 2008. New high school construction is scheduled to be completed in mid-July. Afterward, the existing high school is slated to be demolished.
