Attendance and Absences
Regular attendance is critical to the success of your child and you should do everything you can to encourage good attendance habits. Every child should strive for excellent attendance. If, for some reason a child must miss school, the parents should call the school at 502-624-7449 from 7:30 to 9:00. You may also leave a message on the answering machine at 502-624-4255. If you do not call the school, a staff member will begin calling the sponsor or spouse at 9:00.
The following absences are accepted as excused:
- Student's illness.
- Death or severe illness in the immediate family.
- Dental and medical appointments for the child are excused for the appointment time only.
- Special cases as approved by the principal.
Late Arrivals:
If a student arrives at school after the regular starting time, the parent must sign the student in at the office before the child can go to class.
Departure During School Hours:
The safety of our students is of utmost importance to us. No pupil, after entering the school in the morning, shall leave the school grounds without the consent of the principal and a verified request from the parent or guardian. When it is necessary for a student to leave school early for an appointment or because of illness, the parent must sign the child out on the sign-out sheet in the office. Anyone picking up a student from Pierce School must show identification (this includes parents and guardians). This is for the safety of the students. Once identification has been verified, a staff member will call the child to the office.
Before/After School Care:
Pierce School does not provide supervision of students before or after the normal school day. No child is to arrive at school before 8:25 unless he or she is a bus rider and/or having breakfast. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:10. Any exception to this policy requires written permission from the office. You may reach the office at 502-624-7449. To leave a message, call 502-624-4255.
Parents who need care for their children before or after regular school hours should contact the Child Development Center at 502-624-6703 for children 5 years old and below, or the School Age Services program at 502-624-6903 for children 6 to 12 years of age.
Sibling/Child Care Policy:
If a sibling or child care provider who is high school or middle school age is picking up a student after school from Pierce, the person:
- must have written permission signed from the parent or guardian of the child being picked up.
- cannot bring his or her friends onto the school grounds
- cannot enter the building until 3:05
- cannot go to the child's classroom; they must wait for the child in the lobby.
If this policy is violated, the parent must make other arrangements for pick-up.
