Foreign Language in Elementary School

Bienvenidos a la clase de español

FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) is a third year pilot program at Van Voorhis Elementary. Students in kindergarten through third grade are provided with instruction in Spanish, two times a week, for forty-five minutes a day. The mission of the K-3 foreign language program is to enable students to develop a basis for proficiency in the target language.  The program focuses on the development of cultural awareness, listening, and speaking skills.
The objectives of our FLES program are:

1. To develop listening and speaking skills using a program content that is aligned with the DoDEA Foreign Language Frameworks and that stresses communication-based strategies;
2. To acquire an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures;
3. To reach a level of proficiency in reading and writing in Spanish.
