Content Area Emphasis - 2nd Quarter

LANGUAGE ARTS

Speaking & Listening:
Students should engage in daily conversations, adapting their speech for different audiences.  Students should also listen attentively to the speaker.

Writing:
Students should write complete sentences independently using strategies such as rereading to see if they make sense and sound right, using spacing between words, using capital letters and punctuation correctly, and spelling word wall words correctly.  Students should also use dominate letter sounds to write unknown words.

Reading:
Students should show a thinking process when at difficulty {thinking about the story, using picture clues, monitoring with known words (word wall words), rereading, and using the first letter to confirm or disconfirm} with little or no prompting while reading fluently at level 10.  Students should also retell stories and summarize what the stories are about.

MATHEMATICS
Students should demonstrate understanding of addition and subtraction.  Students should use appropriate computational procedures to solve real-world problems and explain their thinking.  Students should analyze two and three-dimensional geometric shapes, describe spatial relationships using geometry, and use geometric modeling to solve problems.

SCIENCE
Students use scientific inquiry when interacting with elements in their environment.  Students will recognize that materials exist in different states (solid, liquid, and gas).  Students will explore light, heat, and magnetism as forms of energy.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Students should describe how a community depends upon its helpers.  Students should discuss the importance of sharing resources and distinguish between wants and needs.  Describe customs of specific holidays.

The importance of handwriting

Unless children write correctly, they do not see the correct symbols for the sounds.
The importance given to the precision of correct letter formation directly influences a child's ability to read print. Use the form on the attached link to help your child learn to form letters correctly.
