Kindergarten Kapers
Welcome to Kindergarten where we believe children:
- learn naturally
- know a lot about literacy before kindergarten
- learn best when learning is kept whole, meaningful, interesting and functional
- learn best as a community of learners in a noncompetitive environment
- learn best by talking and doing in a social context
All children can learn!
One kindergarten class had a Fall Sense-sation where various tastes and textures were explored.

Taste tests are great...except for LEMONS!

Learning letters and their sounds
Learning the alphabet is more than just recognizing a letter on sight. Children must also learn the sound associated with the letter. Connecting the sound to a visual image works best, so we use an alphabet chart to help students learn letter sounds.
The importance of handwriting
Unless children write correctly, they do not see the correct symbols for the sounds.
The importance given to the precision of correct letter formation directly influences a child's ability to read print. Use the form on the attached link to help your child learn to form letters correctly.

Learning sight words
Many of the most frequently used words in text cannot be chunked or "sounded out." The have to be learned by "sight," or memorized. The attached list of words should be learned by the end of kindergarten.
