Counselor's Corner

newfriend

The counselor welcomes a new student

Good choices earn rewards!

To reinforce good choices and appropriate behaviors, children may be caught doing the right thing, making a good choice, and doing what they are supposed to do at school.  When caught, a student is handed a Caught Being Good ticket - which the child signs.  A weekly drawing will draw out three lucky winners from each class and these children will get to come to the counselor’s office to choose a reward.  Winners are encouraged to give themselves a pat on the back for making good choices and making learning easier.

Homework help

Do your children expect your help with their homework?  Please let your student know you are around if he or she needs you-but their schoolwork is their job. Homework should not take hours to finish and keep him up beyond bedtime nor take away some playtime or family time.  The benefit?  Your children should learn over time to find the answers themselves, as well as practice skills they are learning at school and foster independence.

Student Recognition

Student of the Month

Recognizes those students who are nominated by any staff member for showing exemplary behaviors throughout their school day. A lunch is held once a month to honor these model students.

studentofmonth

Birthday Club

Held once a month honoring those students whose birthdays fall during the month. July birthdays are celebrated with the August birthdays and June birthdays are celebrated with the May observance.

Counseling and Guidance

The Van Voorhis Guidance program provides services to students, parents, and teachers. The program includes: counseling in an individual or group setting; interpretation of student progress reports, records, and standardized test data; classroom instruction on self-understanding and enhancement, appropriate methods of coping, based on developmental needs; and assistance with grade level or school transition.

Students are encouraged to see the counselor whenever the need arises. Students request permission to see the counselor and receive a pass to do so from their classroom teacher. If the counselor is unavailable to meet with the student, the student may leave a message on the counselor's door indicating a need to see the counselor.

Weekly Deployment Support Groups

Van Voorhis School Staff realize that many of our students share an extra burden when the military sends mom or dad away from the family to perform their jobs or receive training in another state or country. To help our students during the time of mom or dad’s deployment or other military assignment which causes an extended absence from home, the counselor holds weekly support groups. Groups meet during lunch time in the counselor’s office so that affected students are not pulled from instruction in the classroom. The groups are for kindergarten through third grade students since all of our preschool children are not a part of the lunchroom program.

  • The students are a wonderful support for each other.
  • They understand when a peer says “I miss my dad” what that means and how it feels.
  • The children share great ideas about what they do when they are missing the absent parent.

Deployment Buddies

deploy

Beginning in October, the Fort Knox High School Student 2 Student Program will send high school students on a once a month visit to provide deployment buddies for the Van Voorhis students in deployment groups.

  • Often the older high schoolers have experienced many parent deployments during their parent’s military career and have a lot to share with our primary students.
  • The teens spend time with Van Voorhis students talking and also help the Van Voorhis kids to complete a project such as letters, cards, and picture frames to send to their far away parent.
  • Periodically, deployment groups will also walk to Walker School across Conroy Street to partner with the deployment support group students there.

Please let the counselor know if a deployment will be impacting your family this school year so that your child may be invited to join support group. (502) 624-2937.
