General Daniel Van Voorhis

The United States Army Armor Center dedicated the Van Voorhis School in memory of the late Lieutenant General Daniel Van Voorhis, United States Army.

General Van Voorhis was born in Zanesville , Ohio , 24 October 1878 . In 1898, he was mustered into Federal Service as a   Corporal in the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and in the same year was appointed Captain, serving in the Philippine Insurrection. He was appointed Second Lieutenant of Cavalry in the Regular Army in February 1900. After the war, General Van Voorhis, served in the office of the Chief of Cavalry and in 1929, he graduated from the Army War College . In 1930, now a full colonel, Van Voorhis was the first commander of a modern armored unit in the United States Army, commanding the Mechanized Force, an experimental unit at Fort Eustis . Subsequently, General Van Voorhis had command, at the then Camp Knox, of the "Detachment for Mechanized Cavalry Regiment," and the 1st Cavalry, Brigade, Mechanized.

As the senior commander of the first mechanized cavalry commands in the United States Army, General Van Voorhis was instrumental in founding the modern concept of mobile warfare and the development of Armor. This first crucial step in the development of American Armor was accomplished by General Van Voorhis at Fort Knox .

General Van Voorhis retired in 1942. He later passed away in 1956. It is to his memory that Van Voorhis School was dedicated in 1958.
