The program for gifted children was initiated to provide appropriate educational opportunities to meet the unique needs and capabilities of students who demonstrate, or who are capable of, developing gifted behaviors. (Gifted Education (GE) was established in accord with Title XIV of Public Law 95-561. ) This is an academic enrichment program with a resource teacher who is available for consultation with classroom teachers, while working with students both within their classrooms and small groups. Our GE program is derived from the belief that the unique worth, ability and dignity of every student should be recognized and cultivated."* Therefore the program may vary year to year, as students' needs and interests change.
Enrollment as a GE student occurs as a result of teacher recommendation and screening by the Gifted Education department. The Walker School Gifted Education guidelines are set by the DDESS policy.
