ACADEMIC COMPETITION
The Kentucky Governor’s Cup is an academic competition team that competes with teams from other schools in the area. The Scott Middle School team is divided into three teams representing different areas of competition---written assessment, quick recall, and future problem solving. Competitions are held in February and March.
The Written Assessment Team competition involves composition or taking a written test in the areas of social studies, science, math, or language arts. Practices will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays beginning in mid-September to practice assessment techniques. Any interested students may try-out.
Future Problem Solving is an academic competitive team consisting of four members. The team is given a hypothetical situation, then the students must create futuristic problem and solutions. The team works together to select the solution they feel is the most appropriate answer and then elaborate in a written product. The members of the team must be very creative thinkers and exhibit excellent writing skills. Team membership is open to both seventh and eighth graders.
Quick Recall is a competition which resembles "Jeopardy." Students must be able to recall facts and data very quickly as well as answer without hesitation. Each team is composed of four players; normally each player has a specialty area such as social studies or science. The students answer the toss up individually, while the bonus is answered as a team. Students in both seventh grades are eligible to try out for the Quick Recall Team. Eight students will be selected for the team. Students who participate in Quick Recall may also compete in the Written Academic Assessments and Future Problem Solving.
